A girl outdide

A girl sitting outside
deep in thought,
she’s part of it all
and she’s so quiet,
so very quiet,
surrendering to the sounds,
the insects’ singing
the birds’ chirping
the drone of an airplane somewhere
somewhere in the distance
the swish of an irrigation sprinkler
the wail of a cat
thin as a hair
a moving tractor
snatches of a nearby conversation
but she’s in her own world,
deep in thought.
A cow is lowing somewhere out there
followed by the dairy barn worker’s shout
as she gathers all of this in,
all the syllables are squares,
quilting the sounds of her childhood.
